§ 01 Definition
What agentic commerce is on Shopify
Agentic commerce is Shopify's term for the set of AI channels — ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Shop, and other agentic storefronts — where an AI assistant either recommends or transacts on a product on the buyer's behalf. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts help page describes it as 'Shopify's AI-powered storefronts' and the changelog post for the dedicated admin says products are 'automatically accessible to AI channels like ChatGPT, Shop, and Copilot through Shopify Catalog.'
The defining infrastructure piece is Shopify Catalog, which feeds the AI channels6. The defining admin piece is the Agentic page that launched 2026-05-112. The defining plan piece is the Agentic plan that lets non-Shopify merchants join the same syndication5. Together those three define the 2026 agentic commerce surface for Shopify.

The new Agentic Storefronts admin page
Shopify launched a dedicated admin page on 2026-05-11. Verbatim from the changelog: 'Agentic Storefronts now has its own page in your Shopify admin. Your products are automatically accessible to AI channels like ChatGPT, Shop, and Copilot through Shopify Catalog.' On that page merchants can 'track performance across all major AI channels, see which queries you rank for, and get recommendations to improve your product data.' Admin location: admin.shopify.com/agentic.
The launch is documented in the Shopify changelog2 and the Agentic Storefronts help page1. Eligibility: in early access and not yet available for all Shopify stores; active by default for eligible stores; email and admin alerts notify when a store becomes eligible. The dedicated article on the admin page walks every section visible inside it.
§ 03 The plan
The Agentic plan
The Shopify Agentic plan is, in Shopify's own words, 'a free subscription plan' where 'When customers complete their purchase in an AI channel's Shopify-powered built-in checkout, you pay only Shopify Payments fees or third-party transaction fees.' It's designed for merchants not currently using Shopify — i.e. legacy or custom-platform brands that want AI-channel reach without migrating their storefront.
The plan54 includes: adding products to Shopify Catalog, selling on agentic storefronts without a Shopify online store, and selling on the Shop channel. It excludes: Online Store, Shopify Messaging, gift cards, manually-created orders, and Shop post-purchase offers. Supported AI channels per the plan page: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, the Shop app, with "more coming soon." The dedicated plan article covers the trade-off in detail.
§ 04 Checkout
Two checkout models, one Catalog
ChatGPT is a discovery-focused referrer — customers complete purchases on the merchant's store via in-app browser or new tab. Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, and Shop support direct purchasing via Shopify-powered checkout inside the AI conversation. Both models read the same Catalog and the same product data; the difference is where the buyer's final tap lands.
The two-model split is documented on the Agentic Storefronts help page1 and reinforced in the changelog2. The merchant-side implication: ChatGPT requires the storefront to convert; Copilot/Gemini/Perplexity require Shopify Payments or a third-party processor to clear in-chat. The Direct checkout article covers the per-channel toggle that controls this.
§ 05 Attribution
Channel and referrer attribution
Verbatim from the Agentic Storefronts help page: orders include 'channel or referrer attribution.' Merchants retain 'full ownership of the customer relationship and post-purchase experience.' That sentence is how Shopify packages the trade-off — the AI channel handles discovery and (sometimes) checkout, the merchant keeps the customer record.
The attribution surface1 appears in Shopify Orders reports and in the Agentic Storefronts admin's performance pane2. The attribution article walks the specific fields and where they surface in reports.
