Agentic commerce

Agentic commerce is the pattern in which an AI agent helps a shopper discover, compare, and purchase products inside the AI conversation itself, rather than directing the shopper out to a storefront1. Shopify published its own canonical definition on 30 April 2026: "AI agents help shoppers discover, compare, and purchase products — all within a conversation."

On Shopify, four AI channels currently surface products in this pattern: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search, and the Gemini app1. Perplexity and the Shop app round out the channels described in the broader Catalog documentation. The merchant-side surface is the new /agentic admin page2 launched 11 May 2026.

Definition

Agentic commerce is the pattern in which an AI agent helps a shopper discover, compare, and purchase products inside the AI conversation itself, rather than directing the shopper out to a storefront. Shopify's own definition, published April 2026.

The defining quality is that the entire shopping journey — intent, discovery, comparison, decision, checkout — can complete inside the AI conversation surface. The shopper need not visit the merchant's storefront at any point, though they may. Shopify's framing is explicit that ChatGPT operates as a "discovery-focused referrer platform" (the shopper completes purchase via in-app browser or new tab on the merchant's site) while other channels support direct purchasing inside the AI conversation via Shopify-powered checkout1.

How agentic checkout works end-to-end

At conversation start: the shopper asks the AI engine an open question ("I need a moisturiser for sensitive skin under $40"). The engine queries Shopify Catalog plus its broader retrieval graph, surfaces product candidates with image, price, and merchant attribution, and presents them inline. The shopper picks one. Checkout either happens inside the AI surface (Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Shop) or via redirect to the merchant's storefront (ChatGPT).

For the merchant, the channel-by-channel distinction matters because attribution and fulfilment differ. Direct-checkout channels complete the order through Shopify-powered checkout inside the AI conversation; the order lands in the Shopify admin with channel and referrer attribution2. ChatGPT-sourced sessions arrive at the storefront and complete checkout there; the attribution lives in the URL referrer chain.

The shopper-side experience is roughly the same across channels. The merchant-side experience is roughly the same too — the order lands in admin like any other order — but the merchant retains "full ownership of the customer relationship and post-purchase experience" per Shopify2. The agentic surface is the discovery and decision layer; fulfilment is still the merchant's.

Where the term comes from

The term gained currency in 2024 - 2025 as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft began shipping multi-step agent capabilities (browse, plan, execute) inside their chat surfaces. Shopify formalised the commercial wedge in late 2025 with Catalog and consolidated it in the Winter '26 Edition (announced December 2025), with the dedicated Agentic Storefronts admin shipping 11 May 2026.

Shopify's April 30 2026 blog post titled "Agentic Commerce on Shopify: How It Works"1 is the cleanest primary-source statement of the company's framing. It pairs the agentic-commerce concept with concrete channel naming (ChatGPT, Copilot, AI Mode, Gemini) and explicitly distinguishes referrer-style channels from direct-checkout ones.

Adoption status in 2026

Material commercial adoption. ChatGPT shopping rolled out at scale through 2025. Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity all surface products inline. Shopify Catalog is the dominant ecommerce data layer feeding these surfaces; competitors (BigCommerce, WooCommerce, custom) are catching up via direct integrations. As of May 2026 the agentic-storefront admin is in early access — 'not yet available for all Shopify stores' — but rolling out by default to eligible stores.

The merchant-side adoption pattern is bimodal. Stores in eligible categories with clean product data are seeing material order volume from agentic channels; stores in ineligible categories (mature content, restricted regions, missing prices) are seeing zero. The Shopify-side ratchet is consistent: every quarter brings more channels, more direct-checkout coverage, and more telemetry in the admin.

Agentic commerce on Shopify specifically

On Shopify, agentic commerce runs through Shopify Catalog. To appear in any agentic channel a store must meet Catalog eligibility (Starter plan or higher, US/CA shipping, no Unlisted status, no mature content) and each product must meet product-level eligibility (title, image, price > $0, identifiable URL). The /agentic admin page then surfaces per-channel performance, ranking queries, and product-data recommendations.

The install order: confirm Catalog eligibility, allow AI crawlers in robots.txt.liquid, configure Knowledge Base FAQs, verify product schema, then monitor the /agentic admin page2 for channel-level performance and ranking queries. The full install lives in Pillar 2 — Cluster 2C Agentic Commerce, and we do it for you in seven days for $499.

Agentic commerce sits at the intersection of Shopify Catalog and the broader GEO discipline.

  • Shopify Catalog: the data layer agentic channels read.
  • Knowledge Base app: the FAQ layer AI agents reference for store-policy questions.
  • GEO: the umbrella discipline; agentic commerce is GEO's commercial endpoint.
  • Cluster 2C: the full install treatment of agentic commerce on Shopify.
