The six engines

Shopify Catalog's named AI channels are ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Shop. Two more engines surface Shopify products without being named Catalog channels: Google AI Overviews (which reads the classical Google index) and Claude (which reads any web page Anthropic's bots can crawl). Together those six engines are the 2026 discovery surface for Shopify.

Catalog's named channels are documented across two pages — the Catalog help page lists 'Shop, Select AI platforms, Shopping sites, AI agents, Agentic storefronts'1, and the Agentic plan page names the AI channels specifically as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Shop6. Google AI Overviews and Claude reach Shopify through the classical web, not Catalog. The Winter '26 Edition13 documents the channel list alongside the Catalog API + MCP general availability rollout.

ChatGPT is different — it's a referrer, not a checkout

ChatGPT is documented by Shopify as a 'discovery-focused referrer platform' — customers complete purchases on the merchant's store via in-app browser or new tab. The other named channels (Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Shop) support direct purchasing via Shopify-powered checkout inside the AI conversation. The merchant-side difference: ChatGPT requires your storefront to convert; the others convert in-chat.

The split is documented on the Agentic Storefronts help page3 and reinforced in OpenAI's own announcements78. The implication for product-page optimization: ChatGPT-sourced traffic lands on your PDP and behaves like high-intent referral; the other channels behave like a fully-completed checkout that just happens to have been initiated in a conversation. Claude and Google AI Overviews — the non-Catalog surfaces

Two engines surface Shopify products without being named Catalog channels. Google AI Overviews lifts from the classical Google index — a Shopify product needs to be indexable, schema-marked, and answer-shaped to appear there. Claude reads Shopify via Anthropic's ClaudeBot (training), Claude-User (live retrieval), and Claude-SearchBot (Claude.ai search). Both engines reward the same things classical SEO rewards: clean indexing, complete schema, citation-worthy content.

Google's Google-Extended documentation11 describes the AI-training opt-out tag that controls Bard/Gemini training but not AI Overviews — AI Overviews uses the classical Googlebot index. Anthropic's bot reference10 names the three Claude bots and the robots.txt directives that control each. The AI Overviews article and Claude article walk each engine separately.

Shop and Sidekick — Shopify's own AI surfaces

Shop is Shopify's own consumer-side AI channel — the app where buyers discover and check out on Catalog products. It has features the other channels don't: customizable PDP blocks (March 2026), Posts (April 2026, the rebrand of Updates that pushes shoppable content into the Shop feed). Sidekick is the admin-side AI assistant — not a discovery surface. Sidekick helps the merchant operate the store; it does not influence buyer discovery.

Shop PDP customization launched 2026-03-2515. Sidekick's Winter '26 expansion14 added theme edits, voice input, multi-step tasks, and Sidekick Pulse. The Shop app article and Sidekick article cover each separately — they're different problems (consumer-side discovery vs admin-side ops).
