How Microsoft Copilot surfaces Shopify products
Microsoft Copilot is a named Shopify Catalog AI channel. It surfaces Shopify products through Catalog and supports direct purchasing via Shopify-powered checkout inside the Copilot conversation. Copilot also references the Bing search index — which means Bing Webmaster Tools health and IndexNow submission matter alongside Catalog data.
Copilot is named on the Shopify Agentic plan page3 and the Shopify Editions Winter '26 announcement4. The direct-checkout model applies (in-chat completion). Bing-side SEO matters because Copilot draws from Bing's index in addition to Catalog.
§ 01 Bing
The Bing index connection
Copilot answers draw on Bing's index for live web data, the same way ChatGPT search draws on Bing. That means a Shopify store invisible to Bing's index is partially invisible to Copilot — Catalog is the structured channel, but Copilot's broader web grounding uses Bing.
Practical implication: Bing Webmaster Tools sitemap submission, IndexNow integration, and Bing's classical SEO signals matter for Copilot in a way they don't matter for ChatGPT (which uses Catalog more directly for product cards) or Perplexity (which has its own index).
§ 02 Direct
Direct checkout on Copilot
Copilot supports in-chat checkout via Shopify-powered checkout. The buyer completes purchases inside the Copilot conversation without leaving. The order appears in Shopify Orders with Copilot as the channel attribution. Direct checkout can be toggled per-channel in the Agentic Storefronts admin.
Per Shopify2, the in-chat checkout model is the default for Copilot. Merchants who prefer storefront UX for upsell or subscription logic can disable Direct checkout for Copilot specifically while leaving Catalog access on.

Eight checks. The bottom four cover the Bing-side work that's unique to Copilot among the AI channels. Treat them as serious — Bing's index is where Copilot's broader knowledge comes from.
- Catalog eligibility passes.
- Copilot channel access is on in admin.shopify.com/agentic.
- Direct checkout setting matches your storefront strategy.
- Top 20 products meet Shopify's seven AI-input categories.
- Bing Webmaster Tools is connected and your sitemap is submitted.
- IndexNow is set up (Shopify supports this via plugin or theme integration).
- Storefront is fully crawlable by Bingbot (no Bing-specific robots.txt blocks).
- Weekly test: ask Copilot three category queries and confirm at least one surfaces your products.
