The Shop app channel: Shopify's own AI consumer surface

Published

What the Shop app channel is

Shop is Shopify's first-party consumer shopping app. It's a named Shopify Catalog AI channel — Catalog products appear in Shop discovery surfaces, and Shop has its own AI-driven personalization. Two 2026 launches made Shop more flexible for merchants: customizable PDP blocks (2026-03-25) and Posts, the rebrand of Updates that pushes shoppable content into the Shop feed (2026-04-07).

Shop is listed in the Catalog's named-channel list1. PDP block customization launched on 2026-03-252. Posts launched on 2026-04-073. Together they make Shop a more controllable surface for merchants than the third-party AI surfaces (which expose less per-product UX control).

PDP block customization on Shop

Launched 2026-03-25. Merchants can add up to 2 custom blocks per PDP on Shop with these block types: image, video, slideshow, product group, and shoppable video. The blocks are configured per product in the merchant's Shop admin and render alongside the standard Shop PDP layout.

Practical use cases: brand storytelling (image / video block above the buy box), bundle promotion (product group block), social-proof video (shoppable video). The 2-block max keeps the PDP clean; it also means merchants have to choose which two blocks add the most lift per product.

Posts — the shoppable content feed

Updates is now Posts (2026-04-07). The new surface supports images and videos up to 2 minutes, tags up to 10 products or a collection per post, scheduling, expiration dates, and distribution into the Shop feed by relevancy. Posts are the in-app content marketing surface — merchants post lifestyle / product / how-to content and tag products for direct shopping.

Posts are the closest thing in the Shop app to the social-commerce feed flow (Instagram / TikTok shopping). Treat them as the in-app content marketing channel: post weekly, tag products with reasonable density, use scheduling for product launches, and let Shop's relevancy ranker do the distribution work.

Shop vs the third-party AI surfaces

Shop has UX surfaces the other AI channels don't. ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity expose a product card and (sometimes) an in-chat checkout — period. Shop exposes a full PDP layout, custom blocks, Posts feed, Shop Pay native integration, post-purchase offers, and the broader Shop discovery surface. The trade-off: building for Shop is more work per product than for the AI surfaces.

Shop optimization checklist

Seven checks for Shop-specific surfacing. The first three are Catalog-side (same as the other channels). The bottom four are Shop-specific.

  1. Catalog eligibility passes; Shop channel access is on.
  2. Top 20 products have Shop PDP blocks configured (lifestyle image + shoppable video typical).
  3. Posts are scheduled weekly (at minimum) with 3-10 products tagged per post.
  4. Shop Pay is enabled on the storefront.
  5. Post-purchase offers are configured in Shop admin if relevant.
  6. Product organization (Type, Vendor, Collections, Tags) is complete — Shop relevancy ranker uses this.
  7. Brand profile in Shop admin is complete (logo, brand story, links).
