How much Shopify takes from a $100 sale
On the Basic plan with Shopify Payments and a standard US card, Shopify takes $3.20 from a $100 order: 2.9% of $100 plus 30¢2. That's the whole per-order charge. Shopify adds no transaction fee to orders paid through Shopify Payments6. On Grow the same order costs $3.00, on Advanced $2.80. The monthly subscription comes on top, billed separately.
Use a third-party gateway instead and two fees stack up: the gateway's own rate, plus Shopify's transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced or 0.2% on Plus1. On a $100 order on Basic, that's $2 to Shopify before the gateway takes anything.

Third-party columns show Shopify's fee only; add your gateway's own rate. *Plus is sold on terms, not monthly or yearly billing: $2,500 a month on a 1-year term, $2,300 on a 3-year term8. Shopify doesn't publish Plus card rates, so the calculator asks you for yours.
Look at the percentage column. The 30¢ fixed fee matters more the smaller the order: on Basic a $50 order pays 3.5% in fees and a $100 order 3.2%. On a $15 order it's 4.9%. Stores with low order values feel the fixed fee more than the plan difference.
The three fees Shopify charges
1. The subscription
Billed monthly, Basic is $25, Grow $65 and Advanced $399 a month. Billed yearly, the same plans work out at $19, $49 and $299 a month1, with the year charged up front5. The Starter plan isn't available to new stores9, so it's not in the calculator. The Agentic plan, for merchants who sell only through AI channels, has no subscription at all10; our Agentic plan guide covers what it includes.
2. Card processing (Shopify Payments)
A percentage plus a fixed fee on every card payment, lower on bigger plans. Shopify's pricing page no longer prints the rates; it says only that they vary by plan1. The per-plan figures the calculator prefills are the ones Shopify publishes on its own site: 2.9% + 30¢ online on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced, and in person 2.6% + 10¢, 2.5% + 10¢ and 2.4% + 10¢2. Shopify's January 2026 article gives the same 2.5% to 2.9% + 30¢ online range3.
Those are rates for a standard card. In the US, Shopify now splits cards into Standard (domestic consumer Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Diners Club) and Premium (domestic business cards and all domestic American Express). International cards carry an extra charge and manually keyed cards cost more4. Your own schedule is in Settings > Payments > Manage > More actions > Manage payment methods > View payment rates. If a lot of your customers pay with Amex or a company card, your blended rate is higher than the prefill.
3. The third-party transaction fee
Shopify charges this on top of your gateway's fees when an order is paid through a provider other than Shopify Payments: 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% by plan1. It also applies, on stores created on or after 12 May 2025, to the part of an order paid with store credit or a gift card. It doesn't apply to Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, PayPal Express Checkout or manual methods like cash on delivery5.
When a bigger plan pays for itself
A bigger plan costs more per month and less per order. It pays off once the fee saved on your sales beats the extra subscription: monthly sales = extra subscription ÷ rate saved. The fixed 30¢ is the same on Basic, Grow and Advanced, so only the percentage counts.

Basic to Grow, billed monthly: Grow costs $40 more and saves 0.2% of sales, so it pays off above $20,000/mo in card sales. On a third-party gateway the saving is 1 full point of the transaction fee, and the break-even drops to $4,000/mo. Fees are only part of the choice, of course. Grow and Advanced also add staff accounts and features, which may matter more than the rate.
Worked example: a month on Basic
300 orders a month at $50 each, Basic billed monthly, Shopify Payments, standard US cards:
Card fees per month = $1.75 × 300 = $525.00
Total to Shopify = $525.00 + $25 subscription = $550.00
Real cost per order = $550.00 ÷ 300 = $1.83 (3.67% of $15,000.00 sales)
Now the same month on a third-party gateway. Suppose it charges 2.9% + 30¢, the same as Shopify Payments. Shopify's 2% transaction fee adds $1.00 to every order, and the month costs $850.00 instead of $550.00: $300.00 more for the same sales. A third-party gateway only makes sense on fees if its rate undercuts Shopify Payments by more than the transaction fee, or if Shopify Payments isn't available to you.
Fees this calculator doesn't cover
- Currency conversion. A US store selling in other currencies through Shopify Payments pays 1.5% on converted payments (2% outside the US, 3% via PayPal Wallet), and Shopify doesn't return it on a refund7. Add it to the card rate for those orders.
- Premium and international cards. Priced above the standard rate. The exact schedule is in your admin, not on a public page4.
- Refunds. Card fees aren't returned when you refund an order5, so a refunded order still costs you its fee. The profit margin calculator accounts for that.
- Marketplace orders. Beyond 50 synced marketplace orders a month, Shopify charges 1%, capped at $99 a month1.
- Apps, themes, domains, chargebacks. Not Shopify plan fees, but they're real monthly costs. Add paid apps to the subscription field if you want them in the real cost per order.
FAQ
How much do Shopify fees cost in total?
Subscription plus card fees. On Basic billed monthly with Shopify Payments, that's $25 a month plus 2.9% + 30¢ per card order. For a store doing $15,000 a month in $50 orders, it comes to $550.00, or 3.67% of sales.
Does Shopify charge a transaction fee with Shopify Payments?
No. With Shopify Payments as your only provider there's no third-party transaction fee on Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments or PayPal Express Checkout orders; you pay the card rate only5. The exception on newer stores is store credit and gift card amounts.
Does paying yearly lower the card rate?
No. The card rate follows the plan. Yearly billing only lowers the subscription: Basic drops from $25 to $19 a month, Grow from $65 to $49, Advanced from $399 to $299.
What are the fees on Shopify Plus?
From $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term, and a 0.2% transaction fee on third-party gateway orders8. Shopify describes Plus card rates as "competitive" and doesn't publish them, so enter the rate from your agreement.
Why are my Shopify fees higher than this calculator says?
Usually card mix. Premium cards (business cards, all domestic Amex), international cards and manually keyed payments cost more than the standard rate used here4. Currency conversion and fees kept on refunded orders add more. Divide last month's total fees by last month's card sales to get your real blended rate, then put it in the card rate field.
