Online store vs Agentic plan

Shopify online store vs Agentic plan — two SKUs, one Catalog

Both Shopify SKUs get your products into Shopify Catalog and into the AI channels Catalog feeds — ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Perplexity, Shop1. The full online store ($39+/mo) gives you everything else: a hosted storefront on your domain, themes, checkout, marketing tools, Shopify Messaging, gift cards, manual orders. The Agentic plan ($0/mo) gives you Catalog access and Shop channel only — designed for merchants who already have a storefront on another platform and want AI-channel reach without migrating6.

The Agentic plan is "a free subscription plan. When customers complete their purchase in an AI channel's Shopify-powered built-in checkout, you pay only Shopify Payments fees or third-party transaction fees"7. It is designed specifically for merchants not currently using Shopify — i.e., legacy or custom-platform stores who want agentic-commerce reach without a full migration.

Verdict up front

If your storefront is already on another platform (WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, custom) and works fine, the Agentic plan is the cleanest path to AI-channel reach — you keep your storefront, get Catalog distribution, pay only Shopify Payments fees on transactions completed in AI checkouts. If you're building a new ecommerce business or your existing storefront needs replacement, the full online store is the better choice. Both ultimately access the same Catalog.

The Agentic plan is a sleeper option many merchants haven't fully digested. Shopify designed it for merchants "not currently using Shopify"7 — businesses on legacy / custom platforms that want agentic-commerce reach without migration cost. For brands whose existing site is profitable and operationally fine, this is a real option.

What the Agentic plan includes (and doesn't)

The Agentic plan includes: adding products to Shopify Catalog, selling on agentic storefronts without a Shopify online store, selling on the Shop channel. The plan does NOT include: an online store, Shopify Messaging, gift cards, manually-created orders, Shop post-purchase offers. The enterprise variant adds unlimited staff, Combined Listings, carrier-calculated shipping, and enhanced API access.

The structural insight: the Agentic plan is a Catalog distribution SKU, not an ecommerce platform. It exists so merchants who don't want a Shopify storefront can still participate in agentic commerce. For a WooCommerce or BigCommerce merchant who already has a working checkout, this is the cleanest possible bridge into ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity recommendations.

External product URL — the load-bearing field

The Agentic plan requires merchants to fill in an external product URL on every product. That URL is how AI channels deep-link from a recommendation back to the merchant's actual storefront. The merchant keeps full control over the customer relationship post-click; Shopify just handles the AI-channel distribution and (for direct-checkout AI channels) the in-conversation payment.

For full online-store Shopify merchants, external product URL is optional — products live on shopify-hosted PDPs by default. For Agentic plan stores, the field is mandatory and load-bearing: a missing or broken external URL means the product is effectively invisible to the AI shopper who clicks through.

Fees and economics

The Agentic plan has no monthly fee. Transaction fees apply when customers complete purchase in an AI channel's Shopify-powered checkout — Shopify Payments fees if using Shopify Payments, third-party transaction fees otherwise. For purchases that happen on the merchant's external storefront (via the deep-link), normal merchant economics apply; Shopify takes no fee on those because the transaction never touches Shopify.

This is the load-bearing economic feature: Shopify only earns on direct-checkout AI-channel sales. For merchants whose AI-channel traffic primarily clicks through to their external storefront, the Agentic plan can be effectively free at scale. For merchants whose AI shoppers complete inside the AI channel via Shopify's checkout, Shopify earns transaction fees similar to any other Shopify Payments transaction.

Who each plan fits

The full online store fits any merchant building a new ecommerce business on Shopify, anyone needing full storefront ops (manual orders, Shopify Messaging, gift cards), and anyone whose existing platform needs replacement. The Agentic plan fits established merchants on legacy or custom platforms who want AI-channel reach without migration, plus enterprise merchants whose AI-channel distribution is one slice of a broader multi-platform strategy.

Many merchants will end up using both at different stages: Agentic plan as a bridge while migrating, then graduating to the full online store once the Shopify-native operations make sense.

When ShopifyRanked is the right answer

Whether you're on the full online store or the Agentic plan, the Catalog Readiness install is the same product-data + AI-shopping work — audit, PDP rewrites for AI agents, Knowledge Base FAQ, policies, robots.txt.liquid, 30-day visibility report. The install runs in 7 business days, $499 one-time, 14-day Walk-Away Guarantee.

We work on both SKUs. If you're on the Agentic plan, the external-product-URL audit becomes a load-bearing line item; everything else is identical. The install page has the full scope.
