§ 01 The verdict
Verdict up front
Etsy wins on day-one traffic for handmade and vintage goods — the marketplace's existing 90M+ shopper base finds your listings via Etsy search without any SEO outside the listing itself. Shopify wins on long-term brand equity, Google + AI shopping reach, higher margins, and customer relationships you own. Run Etsy when you need cash flow now and your category fits the marketplace. Run Shopify when you need to compound a brand. Most successful sellers eventually run both.
Etsy's $0.20 listing fee6 + ~6.5% transaction fee + ad fees is cheap to start. Shopify's $39/mo Basic + 0% Shopify Payments fees is cheap to scale. The crossover point — where Shopify's lower variable cost outearns Etsy's traffic premium — depends on your AOV, your product fit, and how much off-Etsy demand you've generated.

Side-by-side mechanics
Every cell is verified against the named platform's documentation. The 'SEO' column for Etsy refers to Etsy's internal search ranking; the Shopify column refers to Google + AI shopping reach via Catalog.

| Domain ownership | Yes | No (etsy.com/listing/...) | Shopify wins |
| Customer data ownership | Yes (full) | Limited (Etsy controls) | Shopify wins |
| Google SEO surface | Full (your domain) | Listings sometimes rank, usually behind Etsy itself | Shopify wins |
| AI shopping inclusion | Catalog (auto, 5 channels) | Per Etsy's own AI integrations | Shopify wins |
| Day-one traffic | Zero (you build it) | Etsy's shopper base | Etsy wins |
| Brand surface | Full design control | Constrained (shop page template) | Shopify wins |
| Product schema | Theme-emitted JSON-LD | Per Etsy's marketplace markup | Shopify wins |
| Listing structure | Full product fields, variants, metafields | Title + 13 tags + photos + category | Shopify wins on depth |
| Fees | $39/mo + 0% on Shopify Payments | $0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction + ads | Tie (depends on scale) |
| Email capture | Full (mailing list, flows) | Marketplace policy restricts | Shopify wins |
§ 03 The wedge
Shopify Catalog auto-syndicates eligible products into ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Perplexity, the Shop app, and Shopify's agentic storefronts. Etsy listings rank inside Etsy's marketplace search and may surface in Google Shopping; they do not currently auto-syndicate into third-party AI shopping channels.
Practically: if a shopper asks ChatGPT "unique handmade leather wallet for a 50th birthday gift", Shopify Catalog-eligible products from indie leather makers have a real chance of being recommended. The same maker's Etsy listing is generally not surfaced directly by ChatGPT; the shopper would need to be directed to Etsy's own site or use Etsy's marketplace search.
§ 04 The listing structure
Etsy's listing surface is intentionally simple: title, up to 13 tags, category, photos, description, price. The simplicity is the platform's strength — it's easy for craft sellers to master. Shopify's surface is more complex: title, description, type, vendor, collections, tags, variants, options, metafields, barcode/GTIN, external product URL (Agentic plan). The complexity is the platform's strength — it gives AI engines and search engines more signals to use.
For a craft seller doing $50k/yr on Etsy who hasn't yet built a brand, the Etsy surface is sufficient. For a craft seller doing $250k/yr who wants to compound off-marketplace demand, the Shopify surface is structurally better at supporting that growth — particularly for AI-channel discovery, where descriptive product data and structured fields decide recommendation eligibility.
§ 05 The economics
Fees and economics
Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, ~6.5% transaction fee on sale (plus payment processing), plus optional Etsy Ads fees. Shopify charges $39/mo (Basic) with 0% transaction fees on Shopify Payments. Crossover math: roughly $600/mo in Etsy GMV equals the cost of Shopify Basic with no transaction premium — but Etsy includes traffic, Shopify doesn't.
The honest cost comparison is not the fees themselves but the customer acquisition cost. Etsy's CAC is effectively free because Etsy brings the shopper; Shopify's CAC is whatever you spend on ads + the time spent on SEO and content. For most sellers, Shopify wins on CAC only after you've built either a meaningful AI-channel presence via Catalog or a content/SEO flywheel that brings organic traffic.
§ 06 The fit
Who each platform fits
Etsy fits handmade, vintage, craft supplies, digital downloads, and any small seller for whom marketplace traffic outearns the work of building a brand. Shopify fits sellers ready to compound an owned brand, those whose AOV justifies the platform fee, and any craft seller whose long-term ambition exceeds what a marketplace can support.
The cleanest framing for craft sellers: Etsy is the apprenticeship; Shopify is the workshop you eventually open. Run both for years if it suits you; don't migrate prematurely.
