§ 01 The lens
What changes when the products are digital
Three things change. Several of the seven AI-readable Catalog fields are inapplicable — Barcode/GTIN is empty, Variants are minimal or absent, and the shipping-classification surface that matters for physical goods does not exist. The substitute structured signal carries through metafields (digital_product flag, delivery_method, license_type, file_format, file_size) mirrored to Product schema additionalProperty. And the Shopify Agentic plan becomes unusually relevant for digital-only merchants who can sell through AI channels without standing up a full online store.
The field-mapping challenge is structural. Shopify's AI optimization doc2 recommends comprehensive product descriptions and detailed specifications — and for digital products those specifications are different from physical: file format, file size, software requirements (for software downloads), license type (single-user, team, commercial, royalty-free), delivery method (instant download link, email delivery, license key, account access), and post-purchase support model. None of these are in Catalog's seven named fields, but all of them can be populated as metafields with mirror to Product schema additionalProperty.

Catalog field mapping for digital products
Each of Shopify Catalog's seven AI-readable fields maps differently for digital products. Title carries the digital product name (book title, course name, software name, template name). Description carries the digital-specific specifications (format, size, license, requirements). Images carries the cover, preview, or screenshot rather than product photography. Product organization (Type, Vendor, Collections, Tags) carries the categorization (ebook, course, software, template, music, video). Barcode is empty. Variants are minimal (license tier, single user vs team). External product URL is unusually relevant when sold through Agentic-only.
The substitute metafield set the install ships for digital products: digital_product (boolean, true for all digital SKUs), delivery_method (instant download, email delivery, account access, license key), file_format (PDF, EPUB, MP4, MP3, ZIP, etc.), file_size (MB), license_type (single-user, team, commercial, royalty-free, CC0), software_requirements (where applicable — minimum OS, RAM, application versions), post_purchase_support_model (community, email, none). Each metafield mirrors to Product schema additionalProperty PropertyValue, which is the AI-engine-readable surface.
§ 03 Agentic
Why the Agentic plan is unusually relevant for digital products
The Shopify Agentic plan is a free subscription designed for merchants not currently using Shopify, letting them sell in AI channels (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Shop) without standing up a full Shopify online store. Digital products are an unusually clean fit: no shipping logistics, no inventory complexity, no physical-product photography requirements — the merchant can list in Catalog, get AI-channel reach, and direct the actual download or delivery through whichever existing platform they're already using (Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, their own site).
The Agentic plan doc4 covers the eligibility and the External product URL requirement — for Agentic plan stores, each product must include the URL where the AI channel deep-links the buyer for completion. Digital-product merchants typically have an existing site or platform handling the actual download or license delivery; the Agentic plan adds AI-channel reach without requiring a Shopify-native checkout for the delivery mechanics. Standard Shopify merchants (Basic plan and above) can also publish digital products to Catalog with native Shopify checkout, which is the path for merchants who want a single source of truth for the entire transaction.
§ 04 Trust signals
Instant delivery, refund policy, and the trust signals
Digital products invert the standard return-policy logic. Refund-after-download is mechanically difficult (the buyer already has the file) and rare in industry practice. AI engines parsing 'can I return this' or 'is there a refund' questions for digital products need a clear policy signal that explains the refund position. Brands with a transparent no-refund-after-download policy plus a try-before-buy mechanic (sample chapter, course preview, software demo) earn more trust than brands with vague return language.
The Shopify AI optimization doc2 emphasizes complete and up-to-date policies for AI agents. For digital products, the install ships an explicit refund policy explaining the no-refund-after-download position (where applicable), a 'try before buying' policy describing the available preview or sample mechanics, and a delivery-failure policy explaining what happens if the download link fails or the file is corrupted. The Knowledge Base FAQs carry the prose-answer layer for the buyer's research-stage questions. The instant-delivery-policies leaf ships the full implementation.
§ 05 The install
What a ShopifyRanked install actually changes on a digital-products site
The mechanical install ships the same 12 deliverables. The digital-products layer adds five things — substitute structured metafields (digital_product flag, delivery_method, license_type, file_format, file_size) mirrored to Product schema additionalProperty, a no-shipping-schema configuration that explicitly signals digital-only delivery, preview or sample content for every SKU where the category supports it, a Knowledge Base FAQ pipeline answering delivery, refund, license, and post-purchase support questions, and an Agentic-plan evaluation for merchants who could benefit from AI-only-channel positioning.
The audit half scans for empty Barcode (expected; not a flag), missing or generic Images, thin Descriptions that lack the digital-specific specifications, and missing preview content. The Agentic-plan evaluation considers whether the merchant's primary sales motion is DTC web store (stay on Basic plan or higher with native checkout) or AI-channel reach without web-store overhead (consider Agentic plan with external URL). The build half populates the metafield-and-schema layer, ships the no-shipping configuration, builds out preview content where missing, and ships the Knowledge Base FAQ set. The 30-day visibility report tracks digital-specific query citations and Catalog inclusion for the relevant SKUs.
§ 06 Routing
Where to go next in the cluster
Two leaves break the digital-products install into the intent slices that matter most. Start with the no-shipping-schema leaf if your PDPs are sending mixed signals about delivery mechanics (configured for shipping but actually digital). Start with the instant-delivery-policies leaf if your refund policy is vague or your delivery mechanics aren't clearly described to buyers researching on AI engines.
Both leaves carry their own sources and link back to this hub and the pillar. The shared foundation is the Catalog optimization doc, the AI Shopping pillar, the Agentic plan documentation, and the metafield-and-schema patterns this site uses across categories. The digital-products-specific layer is the substitute structured signal, the no-shipping configuration, the preview-content surface, and the digital-specific refund and delivery policies.
