The two-track title rule Shopify documents
Shopify's optimizing-for-AI doc gives a two-track instruction. For human customers: 'use clear, concise product titles.' For AI: 'ensure your product information is comprehensive' and 'add detailed product specifications and technical details.' The hybrid title pattern that hits both: a clear human-readable noun phrase followed by the disambiguating specs that AI agents disambiguate on.
The two-track framing is verbatim from Shopify1. Catalog reads the same Title field — so the same string serves classical SEO, the storefront collection page, the cart line item, and the AI-input layer.
§ 01 Pattern
The hybrid title pattern
Structure: [product type] [key attribute] [variant or differentiator] — [secondary spec], [tertiary spec]. The first phrase is what reads on a collection page; everything after the em-dash is the AI-input detail. The pattern keeps the human read clean and the AI input dense.
Three principles drive AI-friendly titles:
- Lead with the product category noun (Hoodie, Serum, Pillow).
- Add one or two disambiguating attributes inline (heavyweight oversize cotton; vitamin C 20%; queen-size memory foam).
- After an em-dash, add the secondary specs AI uses to recommend (unisex, French terry, 350gsm; with ferulic acid, fragrance-free, 30ml; gel-infused, medium-firm, 10-inch).
Most stores rewrite to this pattern in 3–5 hours for the top 20 products.
§ 02 Examples
Examples by vertical
Five categories with before/after titles. The pattern adapts to category — sizing matters more in apparel than in supplements; ingredient transparency matters more in skincare than in furniture. The underlying rule is constant: clear noun phrase + dense disambiguators.
| Vertical | Before | After |
| Apparel | Hoodie | Heavyweight oversize cotton hoodie in stone — unisex, French terry, 350gsm |
| Skincare | Vitamin C Serum | 20% vitamin C serum with ferulic acid — fragrance-free, 30ml, dermatologist-tested |
| Furniture | Queen Mattress | Gel-infused memory foam queen mattress — medium-firm, 10-inch, hypoallergenic cover |
| Supplements | Creatine | Creatine monohydrate powder — micronized, NSF Certified for Sport, 60 servings |
| Food/Beverage | Single-Origin Coffee | Single-origin Ethiopian Yirgacheffe whole bean — medium roast, washed process, 12 oz |
§ 03 Length
Title length and admin behavior
Shopify allows long product titles in the admin. The classical SEO title tag (the search-engine-listing field) has a separate 70-character maximum per Shopify's adding-keywords help page. Most stores benefit from a longer product title and a tighter search-engine-listing title — the two fields can diverge, and Shopify's UI exposes both per product.
The product title field feeds Catalog and the storefront. The search-engine-listing title field feeds the meta-title for Google and other search engines. Keep the product title detailed for AI; tighten the search-engine-listing title to under 60 characters for classical SEO.
§ 04 Checklist
Title rewrite checklist
Six steps per product. Start with the top 20 by revenue or AI-channel attribution. Walk down the catalog from there.
- Identify the product type noun. Lead the title with it.
- Add 1-2 disambiguating attributes inline (size, material, finish, key ingredient).
- Add 2-3 secondary specs after an em-dash (variant detail, weight, certifications).
- Keep total length under 110 characters for readability.
- Tighten the search-engine-listing title (separate field) to under 60 characters.
- Verify in Shopify admin and in a fresh ChatGPT / Perplexity query for the product.
