Two feeds, two purposes
Shopify Catalog is the first-party feed Shopify maintains and syndicates into AI shopping channels (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Shop). Google Merchant Center is Google's product-data feed that powers Google Shopping ads, organic Shopping tab results, and product-listing surfaces inside Google Search. Different feeds, different consumers, both still active in 2026.
The two systems overlap in the product fields they read but differ in distribution. Shopify Catalog's surfaces are documented on the Catalog page1; Google Merchant Center's surfaces are Google's Shopping product. AI Overviews and Gemini sit awkwardly between — Gemini reads Shopify Catalog (direct integration) and AI Overviews reads the classical Google index, which Merchant Center contributes to.
§ 01 Matrix
Feature matrix
Eight rows that capture the practical difference between the two systems. The headline: Shopify Catalog is automatic for eligible Shopify stores; Google Merchant Center requires a separate account and an active feed.
| Feature | Shopify Catalog | Google Merchant Center |
| Setup | Auto-on for eligible stores | Requires separate Merchant Center account + feed |
| Required fields | Title, image, price, URL | Title, image, price, URL, GTIN/MPN, availability, condition, brand |
| Primary distribution | ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Shop, agentic storefronts | Google Shopping ads, Shopping tab, AI Overviews product cards |
| AI integration | Direct (named channels) | Indirect (via Google's classical index) |
| GTIN required | Listed as AI input; not enforced as gate | Effectively required for product results |
| Per-channel controls | Yes (Catalog access + Direct checkout) | Yes (campaign-level) |
| Cost | Free | Free (Merchant Center); ads cost extra |
| Admin location | admin.shopify.com/agentic | merchants.google.com |
§ 02 Overlap
Where the two feeds overlap
Both feeds read the same Shopify PDP. Title, image, price, description, GTIN, variants — the underlying source is the same admin surface. The Google & YouTube sales channel in Shopify pushes Shopify product data into Merchant Center as a managed feed. The Shopify Catalog read happens automatically. Both feeds end up reflecting the same product fields; the difference is who consumes them.
Practical implication for product-data work: a single PDP rewrite improves both feeds simultaneously. Better titles, better descriptions, complete GTINs, proper organization — all of these flow to both the Catalog AI channels and the Merchant Center Google channels.
§ 03 Both
Why you want both
Each feed reaches surfaces the other doesn't. Shopify Catalog reaches ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity, and Shop — surfaces Merchant Center never touches. Merchant Center reaches Google Shopping ads, the Shopping tab, and the product cards inside AI Overviews — surfaces Shopify Catalog never touches directly. Maintaining both isn't redundant; it's coverage.
The Google & YouTube sales channel in Shopify automates the Merchant Center sync, so the maintenance overhead is low. Confirm the sales channel is installed and the feed is healthy in Merchant Center's Diagnostics tab. The Catalog side is even simpler — eligible stores are auto-included.
